History Repeats? John Daly II Qualifies for the State Amateur

The road to the 110th Arkansas State Amateur Championship officially kicked off, and it's already been one for the books.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (June 2) - At the first qualifier held at Lost Springs Golf and Athletic Club, John Daly II, son of PGA Tour legend and 1984 Arkansas State Amateur winner John Daly, finished as low-medalist and secured his spot at this year's championship with a 6-under-par round. He will now prepare to compete for the state title his father won 41 years ago.

This was the first of two qualifiers for this year's Arkansas State Amateur, and the ASGA's new qualification format is already delivering on its promise to bring out the best in the state. A total of 62 players showed up at Lost Springs, all fighting for 22 avaliable spots in the championship field.

Things got especially interesting at the end of the day, with a five-man playoff for the final four qualifying spots. It was tense and competitive, which is exactly what you want with a tournament that offers such a huge opportunity.

Executive Director of the Arkansas State Golf Association, Carson Roberts, was excited to host the first ever qualifying tournament.

"We are so excited to host the first ever Arkansas State Amateur Qualifying at Lost Springs," said Roberts. "The course provided a needed challenge for all of our competitors, as they look to compete on the state's biggest stage."

With one qualifier down, just one final opportunity is left for players hoping to join this year's elite group. The next qualifier is scheduled for June 8 at Burns Park Golf Course. With only 26 spots remaining, we can expect even more competition as the state's best fight for a spot at the Country Club of Little Rock.
