LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Aug. 12, 2024) - Former ASGA president Wayne Callahan was highlighted by the USGA this month as their monthly committee member spotlight. For the last 25 years, Callahan has volunteered his time and efforts to the game of golf and helped thousands of golfers in Arkansas alone. He has been a constant source of help and direction for the ASGA, most recently helping at the 2024 Fore States Championship in Fort Smith.
Due to him being spotlighted, the USGA asked Callahan several questions about his volunteering, career, and even about his strange sandwich choice at the turn.
Why is volunteering important to you?
"For most of the last 25 years, I have enjoyed giving back to the game I love as a volunteer," Callahan said. "Most of the time I have focused on junior golf. During that time, I have participated in several USGA rules training programs. Within the state, I am on the board and past president of the Arkansas State Golf Association. As a Committee member, I enjoy supporting collaboration between the allied associations and sharing the updates, tools, and resources that the USGA has developed. Personally, I enjoy just seeing tournaments run smoothly and professionally, for the players. Golf is such a great activity, and as many people say, not much bad usually happens on a golf course. I get energy seeing the players compete and hopefully enjoy the healthy outdoor experience."
What is your most memorable golf moment?
"My most memorable golf moment was walking #10 in Match Play with Scottie Scheffler during the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Martis Camp. The hole was a par 5, 642 yards. The altitude was approximately 6,500 feet and the tee box was very elevated. I was wearing a new Garman watch and when we got to the balls in the fairway I must have had a shocked look on my face. His drive was approximately 440 yards, then he hit a 6 iron over the green. I thought, this is different?!! Clearly an understatement, but I still laugh about that moment today."
What was your occupation?
"Most of my career was focused in the consumer-product business. I retired from H.J. Heinz as President of global Walmart business in 2013 before joining Vestar Capital Partners as a Senior Advisor. I enjoy staying involved in the business and supporting the growth of portfolio companies."
What is your favorite snack at the turn?
"No doubt, my favorite snack at the turn, is the peanut butter, grape jelly, bacon sandwich at Marion! I brought that idea back to Pinnacle, my home club. Each year, at one of our tournaments called the Tribute, they feature “the Callahan” at the turn which is the famous Marion peanut butter, grape and bacon sandwich! I seem to have one in my cooler a lot of the time!"
What is the next place on your travel bucket list?
"My wife and I were invited by an LPGA player to come to the Solheim Cup in Gainesville, VA, to enjoy the tournament week as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. We are excited about the experience, and, the opportunity to see, up close, such amazing talent compete. This will be our first Solheim Cup."
Thanks so much to the USGA for highlighting one of our favorite volunteers, rules officials, and former presidents for all he has done for the game of golf!
Thank you, Wayne Callahan!
