In a field of twelve players playing for one spot, Kurt Reither of Bella Vista, Arkansas has qualified for the 69th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.
Reither posted an incredible round of golf, shooting 4-under-par through nine holes and eventually finishing with a 5-under-par 67. His putting defined his great round as he made a bevy of putts throughout the day. When asked about his round Reither noted how crucial it was for his putter to get "hot" on the course.
While Reither firmly led throughout the round, the drama of the day was just behind him in a battle for the first and second alternate spots. Gordy Mckeown and Stan Humphries finished their initial round at 1-over-par which called for a sudden-death playoff. Starting again at the first hole, Mckeown and Humphries went shot-for-shot playing holes one, two, and 18. On the 18th hole, Humphries hit his drive into the right-side fairway bunker but was able to eventually hit his approach shot to roughly four feet from the hole. Mckeown would finish the hole with a par and Humphries made his putt for birdie to win the playoff.
The final results of the day saw Kurt Reither as the singular qualifier, Stan Humphries as the first alternate, and Gordy Mckeown as the second alternate.
The Championship takes place at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, on August 24-29, 2024.
Thank you to all the players that participated and thank you to Pleasant Valley Country Club for hosting. Congratulations again to Kurt Reither on qualifying and we wish him the best of luck in Tennessee!
